04 Jun His Holiness Aram I meets with the Honourable Minister Kenney & attends a special luncheon in His Honour on Parliament Hill
Ottawa, Ontario_ His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Armenian Church of the Catholicosate of Cilicia, met with the Honourable Mr. Jason Kenney, Minister of National Defense of Canada, on June 3, 2015.
His Holiness and Minister Kenney reflected on their meeting in Antelias, Lebanon back in July 2014, during the Minister’s special mission to assess the political situation and to discuss the problems of Christian communities in the region.
His Holiness Aram I decorated the Honourable Mr. Jason Kenney with Knight of Cilicia, an insignia of the Catholicosate, bestowing the Minister of Defense and Multiculturalism for his courage, dedication and continued support of the Armenian Community and the Armenian cause.
Prior His meeting with Minister Kenney, His Holiness was invited to a special luncheon on Parliament as the guest of the Honourable Dr. Harold Albrecht, Member of Parliament for the Conservative Party and the Chair of the Canada-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group.
His Holiness was joined by the following delegation, Bishop Meghrig Parikian, Prelate of the Armenian Prelacy of Canada, Most Reverend Father Housig Mardirossian, Ecumenic Relations Officer of the Catholicosate, Krikor Der Ghazarian, Chairperson of the Executive Council of the Armenian Prelacy of Canada, Dr. Girair Basmadjian, member of the Central Executive Council of the Catholicosate, Raffi Donabedian, Chairperson of the Armenian National Committee of Canada, and Hagop Der Khatchadourian, President of the Armenian National Committee International Council.
About the Catholicosate of Cilicia:
In Cilicia, the Catholicosate became the centre of Armenian life around which the religious, national, cultural, and educational activities were organized. After the Armenian Genocide of 1915, the Catholicosate contributed significantly to the formation and organization of the Armenian Diaspora. During World War I (1915-1918), one and a half million Armenians were massacred by the Ottoman-Turkish government. In 1921, when the French forces evacuated Cilicia, a second wave of massacres ordered by Kemalist Turkey took the lives of another three hundred thousand Armenians. The rest of the Armenians were forced to leave their centuries-old homeland and found refuge mostly in Syria and Lebanon. The Catholicosate in Sis, as well thousands of Armenian churches, monasteries, schools and cultural centres were robbed and ruined by the Turks. Catholicos Sahak II followed His flock in exile. After wandering in Cyprus, Syria and Lebanon, in 1930, He established the Catholicosate in Antelias, Lebanon.

Sa Sainteté Aram I rencontre l’Honorable Jason Kenney et assiste à un déjeuner spécial en son honneur sur la Colline du Parlement
Ottawa, Ontario_ Sa Sainteté Aram I, Catholicos du Catholicossat de Cilicie de l’Église arménienne a rencontré, l’honorable Jason Kenney ministre de la Défense nationale et Ministre du multiculturalisme le 3 juin 2015.
Sa Sainteté et Ministre Kenney ont parlé à propos de leur dernière rencontre au Liban, quand le Ministre était en mission spéciale pour évaluer la situation politique et les problèmes des communautés chrétiennes de la région.
Durant sa visite, Sa Sainteté Aram I a aussi décoré l’honorable Jason Kenney avec la médaille Chevalier de Cilicie, un insigne du Catholicssat de Cilicie, pour son courage, dévouement et son support continuel de la communauté et la cause arménienne.
Avant sa rencontre avec le ministre Kenney, Sa Sainteté était invité à un déjeuner spécial sur la Colline Parlementaire en tant qu’invité d’honneur de l’Honorable Dr Harold Albrecht, Membre Parlementaire du partie conservatoire et Président de l’Association parlementaire Canada-Arménie.
Sa Sainteté été accompagné d’une délégation, y inclus l’Évêque Meghrig Parikian, Prélat de la Prélature arménienne du Canada, très Révérend Père Housig Mardirossian, Officier des Relations œcuménique du Catholicossat, Krikor Der Ghazarian, Président du Comité exécutif de la Prélature arménienne du Canada, Dr Girair Basmadajian, membre du Comité Exécutif Central du Catholicossat, Raffi Donabedian, Président du Comité National Arménien du Canada et Hagop Der Khatchadourian, Président du Conseil International du Comité National Arménien.
À propos du Catholicossat de Cilicie :
En Cilicie, le Catholicossat était le centre la communauté arménienne, autour duquel s’organisaient toutes les activités religieuses, nationales, culturelles et éducatives. Après le Génocide arménien de 1915, le Catholicossat a significativement contribué à la formation et l’organisation de la diaspora arménienne. Durant la Première Guerre mondiale (1915-1918), un million et demi d’Arméniens ont été massacrés par le gouvernement Ottoman Turc. En 1921, quand les forces françaises ont évacué la Cilicie, une deuxième vague de massacres, cette fois-ci organisée par la Turquie Kémaliste, a coûté la vie à 300,000 Arméniens. Le reste des Arméniens ont été forcés de quitter leur patrie centenaire et ont trouvé refuge en Syrie et Liban. Le Catholicossat de Sis et des milliers d’églises, de monastères, d’écoles et de centres culturels arméniens ont été dérobées et détruites par la Turquie. Le Catholicos Sahak II a suivi son peuple en exil. Après avoir parcouru la Chypre, la Syrie et le Liban, il a établi le Catholicossat à Antelias, au Liban.
