“Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31
You will conceive and give birth to a son…”Luke 1:30
“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. Luke 1:38

The celebration of God’s Revelation and the commercial preparations have already flooded the streets of our cities and the big retail outlets. Everywhere you look, there are lit trees, luminous shop fronts and ebullient carols announcing the good news that Christmas is near. Of course, above all of these things, there is an intense desire to create a pleasant ambience.

However, the preparations for the celebration of Christmas come to us from a centuries-old tradition and religious rite from the Christian Church.

In our church’s Holiday calendar, before the celebration of Christmas, there is a period of 50 days, which begins towards mid-November and goes on until Christmas night, has been noted as a time for preparation. This period is called “Advent Lent,” and like many beautiful traditions in today’s superficial and indifferent world, it has been overlooked and traded in for the world’s formalities in the importance of Holiday preparations.

The Gospels give us a fundamental mission in life: to travel to the four corners of the globe and spread the good news to people of all races, nationalities and cultures of the brotherhood Jesus brought to our world.

The episode of God’s Revelation in the Gospels, particularly in the Gospel of Luke, begins with a peculiar salutation,“Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” (Luke 1:28)

This greeting, which was extended to a young virgin living in Nazareth, a small and insignificant town in Palestine, revolutionized the world.

The Evangelist describes the event as follows: “…God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin…The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

“Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favour with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High… his kingdom will never end…”

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered.” (Luke 1:26-38)

The Mother of God, or in other words, the Virgin Mary, is a single and unique character in the Christian Church. Today, she is an unsurpassable entity and a role model for millions of believers. She is the queen of all the church’s saints. Thousands of prayers were written to her and beautiful hymns and songs were composed in her honour.

The sectarian and Protestant movements tried in vain to bring her down from the pinnacle of love and respect.

The British say that when one of their greatest preachers passed away and went to Heaven, Jesus greeted him and said:

“Welcome to Heaven, I know that you know my father, but I don’t think you’ve ever met my Mother.”

During the celebration of Christmas, that is the celebration of the Birth of our Saviour, it is impossible not to think about this young girl, whom God trusted with a great responsibility and the role she played in God’s New Creation and the redemption of mankind.

The question isn’t who Mary of Nazareth is to us, but rather who is Mary of Nazareth to God?

Gabriel the Angel, who was sent by God, came to a woman who lived a peaceful, regular life, and was preparing to marry a carpenter, but with his life altering greeting moved Mary. “Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.” (Luke 1:29)

It is not easy for anyone to face God’s message and receive His call.

We all pray to God so He may hear our wishes and guide us, but we pray without feeling that spiritual passion. Some of us even pray every day, but we pray without hope that God will actually answer our prayers. Everything is natural and easy when God is far away in heaven, but when God approaches us and calls us, that’s when things get complicated.

God’s call to Mary is not any different than His call to any other characters in the Bible. They too were taken aback by God’s call and were troubled, because their peaceful and regular lives were suddenly turned upside down, because their specific plans were changing, because just like us, they also had important things to do.

Consequently, we can ask ourselves why God chose Mary? What did she do to merit being the chosen one? Was there something special about her or did she have a particular characteristic in her life that grabbed God’s attention?

“… the angel said to her, you have found favor with God.” (Luke 1:30)

It isn’t Mary who made herself worthy to God through her moral values, but it is God who made her worthy.  God doesn’t choose us for our talents, God selects us according to His own reasons, and it is His choice that makes us worthy. When it is God who chooses you, you are worthy. The Bible repeatedly presents us with many examples of average, weak and ill-treated people He chose as His servants. It is God who makes insignificant and ill-treated people famous and unforgettable, who turns shepherds into prophets, fishermen into apostles, average believers into heroes and saints, and it is God, who turned an unknown girl from Nazareth into the Mother of the New Creation.

God in His Creation and redemption plans used two women, Eve and Mary. The difference is that the first one revolted against God and became the mother of the mortality of human kind, while the other one said: “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.” It is with that faith and respect for God’s will that Mary became the mother of redeemed men and heaven’s queen.

This answer from Mary is also recalled by her son’s words, spoken on the Mount of Olives: “…yet not my will, but yours be done.” (Luke 22:42)

We all would want to know what life holds for us, how our future will play out and our purpose on this Earth, or in other words, what God has in store for us. However, when man hears God’s calling, to follow Him is our duty to listen to His will, because that is the only way, by following Mary’s example, man can discover what their purpose in life is. It is only by following her example that we will finally hear how God can and will use our lives for the realization of His plans and we will become what God wants us to be.

During Jesus’ Crucifixion, Jesus had a very profound and meaningful discussion with his mother and one of His loyal disciples. “…Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” (John 19:26-27)

Jesus, with those words, was not only inviting His faithful disciple to be His mother’s son and His brother, but He was also inviting all those who believe in Him across time to be His sibling, that is not only Mary’s children, but also God’s children.

God could have chosen any way to send His son to earth, but He preferred to give Him to us through Mary, so she may restore the sanctity of motherhood, which was lost by Eve’s selfishness.

Mary, just like Eve, could have said no to God and instead followed her own desires, however she opted to say yes to God’s calling and became a nurturing mother, who followed her son’s every footstep and had faith in her son.

Mary, just like Eve and all our mothers was an average human being, and like all of us, she was blessed by God, however, like Eve and many of us, we don’t hear or don’t want to hear God’s calling, because we are carried away with our personal needs and temporary pleasures. Mary, of her own free will and sacrifice, became and remains the eternal Mother and the saintly archetype of motherhood.

Happy New Year and a Merry Christmas to all!
