Prelacy Holds Annual Armenian Spelling Bee
The Armenian Prelacy of Canada’s Armenian National Education Council held its second annual Armenian Spelling Bee at Montreal’s Armenian community centre on the afternoon of April 13, 2008.
One by one, the students took the stage and were presented with a random word by the host and pronouncer, Sonia Kiledjian Ajemian, as their parents and viewers oohed, aahed and clapped along with their wrong and right answers.
The panel of judges: Raffy Boudjikanian, Viken Tufenkjian, and Annie Ohanian determined the correctness of each word spelled, and Dr. Aida Boudjikanian was on hand as the official time keeper.
The winners (in order) of the fourth to sixth grade level are Araz Kuptanjian, Azniv Aghbabian and Paulina Oyan, for the junior high level: Mashdots Koyounian, Raffi Tavitian and Maria Tanielian, and for high school: Ani Tashjian, Nanor Palandjian and Karine Plaisance.
First place winners from each group took home a $100 gift certificate from the Hamazkayin Cultural Association bookstore; second place winners were awarded a $75 gift card and those who ranked third received $50.
The awards were a donation from the Regional Executive of the Hamazkayin Armenian Cultural Association. All the winners were also given a special certificate from the Armenian Prelacy of Canada. Special draws were also held for all the participants of each group for a pair of passes to the Montreal Biodôme.
