His Eminence in Vancouver for Komitas Tribute

His Eminence Archbishop Khajag Hagopian, Prelate of the Armenian Prelacy of Canada, joined the Armenian community of Vancouver for a week-long special visit and attended Vancouver’s tribute held in honour of Komitas Vartabed.

Upon His arrival, His Eminence presided over Divine Liturgy at St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Apostolic Church on January 31, 2010. During his stay, Archbishop Hagopian met with community representatives and also visited local families.

As special tributes in honour of Komitas Vartabed’s 140th anniversary were being held across the world, the homage held in Vancouver took place under the Auspices of His Eminence Prelate Hagopian, and under the patronage of Mr. And Mrs. George Aghazarian.

Organized by Very Rev. Fr. Housig Mardirossian, Vancouver’s St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Apostolic Church Pastor and the church’s Board of Trustees, this distinctive tribute took place on the evening of February 5, 2010.

The Vancouver homage included the outstanding performances of Tamar Simon Gregorian on piano with Carmen Fast, and Aram Karakas on violin accompanied by Braedon Lim on piano.

The evening also featured a unique audio recording of Komitas Vartabed’s voice dating back to 1912-1913 Paris. The life and works of Komitas were also presented by Dr. Armand Ayaltin.

The Phoenix Chamber Choir, under the baton of Dr. Ramona Luengen, took the stage for the second part of the tribute.

Archbishop Hagopian travelled to Vancouver specifically for this occasion and was joined by Executive Council member, Mrs. Osana Mksyartinian.

Among the many guests present that evening, were also clergy members representing different churches, as well as the Vice President of the National Olympic Committee of Armenia, Mr. Derenik Gabrielyan.

Upon his return in Montreal, His Eminence attended the local Homage to Komitas, which was presented by the Viva Voce vocal ensemble of Montreal at the Christ Church Cathedral on the evening of February 7, 2010. This homage was organized by the Sourp Hagop Armenian Apostolic Church and was held under the patronage of Christine St-Pierre, Minister of Culture, Communications and the Status of Women of Québec.
